The GNU software archives from prep.ai.mit.edu contain over 80
software packages for your UNIX computer. You get 250 megabytes of
source code, and you also get PRECOMPILED binaries for SunOS 4.1.3
and Solaris 2.3. You can use most of the software straight off of
the disc and save yourself both disk space and compiling time.
The GNU utilities pride themselves on portability. You will meet
them wherever you go. Once you know these tools, you will become
comfortable in any Unix environment.
The industry standard Emacs text wditor will increase your
programming speed with its awareness of programming languages. As a
C developer, you use the GCC C and C++ compiler, the C++ library, the
debugging tool gdb, and many other tools.
You'll also get Perl (fast becoming the industry standard scripting
language), smalltalk, and more. For fun, try GNU chess, GNU go, and
GNU shogi.
Everything comes with source and ducumentation. You even get patches
for the larger packages that you can apply to an exisiting setup to
bring it up to the current release. No need to lose all the
customization you have made! With this disc, you can bring any
barebones system up to a professional working environment.
